Subproject 3
The proposed answer to both the skeptical and scientistic stances towards the above problems depends on a robust notion of fundamentality. In this part of the project, the aim will be to try to characterize this central notion, in order to render it fruitfully applicable to the reconciliation enterprise. Part of the job will be to further clarify this notion along with others of the same family: being REALLY the case, grounding in the sense of metaphysical explanation, metaphysical structure, etc.
Fundamentality is currently flourishing topic in metaphysics, and the recent developments in the metaphysics of fundamentality are just beginning to find their place in the philosophy of physics. We trust that by developing the theory of fundamentality and cognate notions at the intersection of these two disciplines will be beneficial to both.
